For the 12 th consecutive year (minus the covid year), another successful Wodapalooza has come and gone, and for the second straight year another successful partnership with an Rx Smart Gear jump rope highlighting the Elite Swim event.

Everyone who has ever attended Wodapalooza knows that Bay Side Park is home to one of the most majestic swim workout venues in the competitive CrossFit landscape. Athletes can always expect to be thrown into a grueling workout that spikes the heartrate, fries the shoulders, and plunges them into Biscayne Bay for a beautiful open-water swim. Miamians really know how to party!

Roman edged out Ricky to give the fans the most exhilarating race of
the weekend.

Last year, during the 2023 TYR WZA swim event, we witnessed arguably the most exciting, down-to-the-wire races between Roman Khrennikov and Ricky Garard in the Double Shot with a Twist workout. This crazy workout was a 2-rounder for time of 50 Wallballs (30,20lb), Open Water Swim, and 150 Drag Rope double unders, all in a 20-minute time cap. If you’ve never tried a Drag Rope, it is infamously one of the toughest jump ropes you can possibly do double unders with. It’s a woven rope with no bearings or swivels, just a whole lot of drag. To do 150 reps AFTER doing heavy wallballs and swimming is just masochistic, and they had to do 2 rounds of that! In the most exciting photo finish, Roman edged out Ricky to give the fans the most exhilarating race of the weekend.

Fast forward to the 2024 TYR WZA and we’re wondering how last year’s event can be topped.

Well, the Loud and Live crew have been doing this for a long time, and they have a lot of tricks up their sleeves. This year, they moved the entire Bay Side competition floor onto a floating barge just a few meters offshore. There were 2 gang planks to enter and exit the barge, and there was a steep ramp into the water for the swim. This year, the Elite Swim event Wipe Out featured a collaboration rope between Rx Smart Gear and Wodapalooza, the TYR WZA Frevo Beaded jump rope. It featured the WZA pink and blue beads with pink and blue traction bands, capped off with the TYR Wodapalooza patch. The organizers reached out originally, inquiring about using our 1 lb. heavy cable jump rope for this workout. I immediately dissuaded them from this notion, explaining that the potential for broken toes was very high given the athletes would be performing double unders barefoot. I then proposed that the beaded rope would not only be a much safer option for bare feet but would also provide an equally challenging test since beaded ropes also have a lot of air drag.

Coupled with the colorful branding opportunity to have TYR WZA colors brightly displayed during the workout, and they were all for it. I sent them a couple of sample ropes, and they tested the workout only to confirm the beaded rope lived up to my suggestion as a very challenging test. Wipe Out was a timed event which started with 50/40 Cal Echo Bike, Swim, 150 Beaded Double Unders, Swim, then finished with a 500m Assault Run.

Next to all the beautiful pink and blue beaded jump ropes whizzing around the barge, the ramp entry into the water provided a lot of excitement with slipping and sliding going in and coming out of the water. And again, another exciting finish, with young gun James Sprague coming from behind to overtake veteran Brent Fikowski in a nail-biter of a finish. We were fortunate that the swim event happened on the only hot and sunny day of the weekend, providing a truly Miami experience.
